The garden was built in 1927 with the planting of 15,000 bushes of more than 100 varieties of roses, and considered at the time to be "the largest rose garden in the world." In 1936, Danish sculptor Thyra Boldsen installed large pedestals with marble statues at the four corners of the garden. Dedicated to womanhood and motherhood, these four figures symbolize love, life, and joy.

In 1940, The All-America Rose Selection, a rose growers organization, began donating its Rose of the Year to the garden. By the mid-1980s, the garden had more than 20,000 rose bushes and more than 200 varieties. In 1991, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Nowadays, the garden is visited by more than a million people each year and is a popular location for photoshoots, weddings, and special events. Assistant Vice President of USC Hospitality Kris Klinger and his team were happy to take on the responsibility of providing 800 senior citizens in Los Angeles County with 10 meals per week apiece, although it was a challenge for the campus’s kitchen.

As part of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Senior Meal Emergency Response Program, five different meals were prepared and they were coordinated into two separate weekly deliveries, distributed by local cab companies.

USC Hospitality’s Chef Marisa Allano explained that preparing and packaging 8,000 meals a week had logistical challenges, but they were committed to making the program a success. Maria Hernandez, Unite Here! Local 11 organizer, hopes that other cities will look to L.A. as a role model and follow their lead.

The USC Hospitality team was proud to be part of the Senior Meal Emergency Response Program’s efforts to support the local community. Coming together with coworkers and the city to provide essential services to seniors who need to stay safe at home has been rewarding for all involved. This prestigious status indicates that USC Hotel has met careful standards for pollution prevention, waste minimization, energy conservation, water conservation, and environmentally sensitive purchasing. The careful following of these standards has led to over 250,000 plastic bottles being kept out of landfills and 36,000 paper cups left unused, in addition to the numerous other benefits.

Opening on March 16, 2019, “Dogs! A Science Tail” is a heartwarming and endlessly fascinating presentation that explores the bond between humans and dogs. You will discover the science behind our innate social connection with man’s best friend through a variety of hands-on exhibits.

You’ll also learn more about their amazing senses and get the opportunity to hear, see, and smell the way that dogs do! Plus, there are plenty of chances to play with a pup with the exhibition’s live demos of working dogs, therapy dogs, and rescue dogs.
